Someone mowed my budding trilliums last month. I’m not naming names, but I was pretty sad because this patch of wild wake-robin looked ready to put on its best display in years. Then, roaming through our scruffy woods, I found a bounty of trilliums I’d never noticed before, both red and white, hiding in the shadiest places — under an old apple tree and deep in a blackberry thicket. Even more prevalent were jack-in-the-pulpits, another distinctive shade lover.
This month I’ll transplant some into a shady spot near a path. Nice to work with a plant that clearly likes your home terrain already!
